Abstract:
Tornado damage surveys are fundamental to characterizing near-surface wind fields, assessing disaster intensity, and establishing high-quality tornado database. They play a critical role in enhancing tornado monitoring and warning capabilities. This article reviews the main advances in tornado damage surveys in China since 2015 from five perspectives: near-surface wind field characteristics, intensity rating criteria, survey methodologies, tornado database construction, and operational workflows. Based on this review, we identify the key bottlenecks currently facing the damage survey, including limited standardization and dissemination of the survey process, incomplete data collection of key elements, and significant regional differences in intensity evaluation. To address these challenges, We propose several countermeasures and recommendations, including improving the technical system of damage survey, strengthening the training of damage investigators and meteorological information personnel, establishing a standard tornado database and promoting the localization application of tornado intensity evaluation standards. These efforts are expected to provide a reference for improving the tornado damage survey system and tornado database in China.
