The spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of extreme precipitation in the Beijing Tianjin Hebei region during the main flood season and its impact on urban drainage pressure

Abstract: Using daily precipitation observation data from 175 national stations in the Beijing Tianjin Hebei region from 1991 to 2020 and urban drainage network data in 2020, the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics and ten-day changes of extreme precipitation during the main flood season (July and August) in the Beijing Tianjin Hebei region were analyzed, and their effects on different urban drainage pressures were compared. Results are as follows: (1) There is a clear latitudinal distribution feature of extreme precipitation during the main flood season in the Beijing Tianjin Hebei region, with an overall trend of more in the southeast and less in the northwest. The extreme precipitation during the main flood season in the southeastern region of Beijing Tianjin Hebei accounts for about 50% of the total precipitation. Most cities experience extreme precipitation mainly in late July. (2) The areas with high drainage pressure during the main flood season in Beijing Tianjin Hebei are mainly distributed in Qinhuangdao, Baoding, Cangzhou, and the southeast of Chengde. Among them, Qinhuangdao has the highest drainage pressure due to the lowest density of the city's drainage network. Beijing, Tianjin, Xingtai, and Zhangjiakou have relatively low drainage pressure. Zhangjiakou is due to low local extreme precipitation, while other cities are due to high density of drainage networks. (3) When short-term heavy rainfall occurs, drainage networks in areas such as Qinhuangdao, northeastern Baoding, and central Shijiazhuang face significant pressure. (4) There are differences in the period of maximum drainage pressure in different cities. The maximum drainage pressure in southern, central, and northern cities occurs in early August, late July, and mid July, respectively. The drainage pressure index in most cities exceeds the average level of the main flood season in July.
