Abstract:
Based on surface thunderstorm days and data collected by lightning detection network in Hubei, in this paper we discuss the lightning activities along the Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed rail line in the section of Hubei province by using statistical analysis. The results indicate that thunderstorms occur frequently in the Hubei section along the railway line all year round, and the rail line is situated in the high lightning density zone of Hubei. The averaged number of thunderstorm days is the highest in summer, and the lowest in winter. The number of lightning days from April to August accounts for 91.5% of the annual total, indicating that this is the intensive lightning period. During a day,most of the lightning happen from 15 pm to 19 pm, when convective lightning weather occurs frequently, which make it the key period for lightning protection. The area centered the Xianning station has the highest lightning density, the most frequent lightning activities, and therefore,is the most important area for lightning protection.
