Preliminary Application of Dual-Polarization Weather Radar in a Severe Hail Shooting Process

The paper first analyzed the background of the hailstorm in Beijing region on June 23 2008, Secondly, on the basis of a concrete analysis of the evolve characteristics of weather radar products, through selective analysis of the characteristics of polarization parameters( ZDR、ρHV、KDP), summed up some of the characteristics of polarization radar observations of hail clouds: Strong echo in the radar reflectivity map and higher altitude, ZDR tends to of zero, ρHV and KDP suddenly decreases than the surrounding values. In addition, the KDP and ρHV played role in distinguishing false echoes and judging echo development were analyzed. The above study has certain reference value to improve the application of the dual-polarization weather radar in strong convective severe weather forecasting, hail disaster mitigation and aviation security aspects.
